Functional And Safe Nursery

Functional and SAfe Nursery

One of my favorite spaces to design has to be a nursery for new parents!

Designing a nursery is an exciting and rewarding experience for any new parent, but it can also feel overwhelming with so many options and decisions to make. Curating a nursery means carefully selecting and arranging the furniture, decor, and accessories to create a beautiful and functional space for your little one. In this interior design blog, I’ll provide some tips and ideas for curating a nursery that's both stylish and practical.

  1. Start with a theme or color scheme Having a theme or color scheme in mind can help you make decisions about furniture, decor, and accessories more easily. For example, you may choose a specific theme like "under the sea" or a color scheme like pastel blues and greens. Sometimes themes aren’t present, so don’t feel like you need to have a theme! For this space I chose to go by only a color scheme from the art in the space - You guessed it Pinks and Blues!

  2. Choose functional furniture When selecting furniture for your nursery, consider the functionality of each piece. A crib, changing table, and dresser are essential items, but you may also want to add a comfortable glider or rocking chair for feeding and soothing your baby.

  3. Add storage solutions Babies require a lot of stuff, so it's important to have adequate storage solutions in the nursery. Consider adding shelves, baskets, and bins to keep toys, clothes, and other items organized and easily accessible.

  4. Incorporate soft lighting Soft lighting is essential for creating a calming and peaceful atmosphere in the nursery. Consider adding a dimmer switch to overhead lighting or incorporating a soft night light for night time feedings and diaper changes.

  5. Include personal touches Adding personal touches to the nursery can make it feel more special and welcoming. Consider adding family photos, custom artwork, or a monogrammed blanket to create a personalized space for your little one.

  6. Consider safety Safety should always be a top priority when designing a nursery. Ensure that furniture and art is securely anchored to the wall, cords and wires are out of reach, and that the room is free from potential hazards like loose rugs or sharp corners. TAPE THOSE RUGS DOWN!

  7. Keep it simple Remember that less is often more when it comes to designing a nursery. Too many decorative items can overwhelm the space and create a cluttered and chaotic environment. Stick to a few key pieces and accents to create a cohesive and calming space for your little one.

Curating a nursery is all about carefully selecting and arranging the furniture, decor, and accessories to create a beautiful and functional space for your little one. By starting with a theme or color scheme, choosing functional furniture, adding storage solutions, incorporating soft lighting, including personal touches, considering safety, and keeping it simple, you can create a nursery that's both stylish and practical.

TIPS FOR SAFETY

Artwork: Don’t just nail the artwork to the wall Add Velcro to the back of your artwork and walls for extra support

Window Treatments: DTD also known as - Ditch The Drapery - go for window treatments that have no hanging cords like these natural woven cordless roman shades

Table Lamps - Table lamps and other electrical equipment can often be secured by wrapping the cords of the equipment around one of the back legs of the table it rests on - I’ve also added velcro to the unit.

Area Rug - Tape those rugs down! Use double sided carpet tape - I’ve been doing this for years!

Recliner or Chairs - Try to place these in corners of the room, for extra safety,

Side Tables - You can also use L-Brackets to keep side tables from tipping secure them from underneath and once you no longer need to baby proof remove the brackets.

Accessories - Keep these to a minimum, keep those items light weight and small to reduce risk of injury.
